Rural Ramble 1: Miller's Dale To Blackwell Circular
Distance: 4.7 miles Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours Price: 8.00 per person
(Special family/group rates available - see below)
The first of our "Rural Rambles", this circular walk starts and ends at the site of the former Miller's Dale Station and uses a mix of established walking trails, cross-country footpaths and quiet rural lanes.

The walk begins by following the route of the old Derby to Manchester railway along the Monsal Trail, stopping along the way to look at the remains of the lime industry that once provided employment for so many in the area. Having passed through the rugged scenery of Chee Dale, it then leaves the Monsal Trail for the climb up through a small unnamed Dale to the hilltop above. From there, it crosses the fields to the small village of Blackwell and the nearby hamlet of Priestcliffe Ditch. In the shadow of Priestcliffe Low with its springs and Bronze Age burial mound, the walk joins a quiet trackway to make the descent back into the valley for the return to the starting point at Miller's Dale Station.

We offer two alternative start times for this walk, 9:00am and 1:00pm. While the 1:00pm walk is easily accessible by public transport from as far away as Derby, Manchester, Chesterfield and Sheffield, you will most likely need to use a car to get to the 9:00am walk. Alternatively, if you make a private booking for this walk, you can pick your own start time, and even change the start and end point of the walk.

When is this walk available?

This walk is available as a scheduled walk each month between the beginning of March and the end of November. Each day that the walk is scheduled, you can choose either the 9:00am or 1:00pm start time. It may also be booked privately on a date of your choice by booking a Personal Walking Guide, or any scheduled walk may be upgraded to a private booking (subject to conditions - see below).

We can accept private bookings via a Personal Walking Guide for this walk on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Friday afternoons, most Saturdays and some Sundays. It is also available on most Bank Holidays. If you make a private booking for this walk, either upgrading a scheduled walk to a private one, or booking a Personal Walking Guide, you can also request a different start time if desired. While we cannot guarantee this time, we will make every effort to accommodate your request.

For a private booking, we can also vary the route of the walk to change the start and end point to The Waterloo Hotel public house on the A6 just north of Taddington. As this is more easily accessed by public transport (but has no public car parking), this is a good option for a morning walk with a start time of 9:30am or later if you wish to use public transport.

Please note that, for bookings between late November and the end of February especially, there is the possibility that the walk may take place in snow or icy conditions. If we believe the conditions to be hazardous, we will attempt to notify you at least 24 hours in advance to give you the option of cancelling or rescheduling your booking.

Travel to and from the walk.

This walk is easily accessible by car and can also be accessed by public transport, although many bus services will not arrive in Miller's Dale in time for a 9:00am start. Full details of how to get to and from the walk will be included in the walk information sheet you will be sent along with your booking confirmation, but detailed information on the various public transport options is also available on our travel information page, which we try to keep as up to date as possible.

By far the easiest way to get to this walk, and the method we recommend in most cases, is by car. Parking for up to 80 cars is available at Miller's Dale Station, costing 3.50 for up to 4 hours, or 4.50 for all day.

Miller's Dale Station is served by a number of buses, although the frequency of services is quite low. This low frequency of services means that it is not possible to access the 9:00am walk via public transport, although a 10:00am start time would be possible for a private booking by using the 9:30am TM Travel 65 bus from Buxton. You could then return to Buxton on the 1:35pm number 66 bus from Miller's Dale. The 1:00pm walk is easier to access via public transport, although as the buses arrive into Miller's Dale some time before the scheduled start time, you would have around 40 minutes to wait. This would, however, be an ideal time to sit and have some lunch at the picnic tables by the old station building.

As Buxton is easily accessible by bus or train from Derby, Belper, Matlock, Bakewell, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Nottingham, Ashbourne, Macclesfield, Stockport and Manchester, you can use any of these bus services to change there onto the number 65 bus to Miller's Dale. From Derby, Belper, Matlock and Bakewell, the High Peak Buses "Transpeak" service arrives into Buxton at 11:28am, giving you around 30 minutes in Buxton before the 12:00pm number 65 to Miller's Dale. From Stockport and Manchester, the regular Northern Rail services to Buxton connect with the number 65 bus at Buxton Railway Station. From Ashbourne, the 10:05am 442 bus service arrives into Buxton at 11:20am after a very scenic run through the Peak District. From Macclesfield, the number 58 bus also gives a wonderful scenic ride over the famous A537 "Cat & Fiddle", arriving into Buxton at 11:48am, giving you 12 minutes to change onto the number 65 to Miller's Dale.

Please note that, as of April 2016, the Derbyshire Wayfarer day rover ticket is no longer valid on the "Transpeak" and you may need to purchase High Peak Buses own day rover ticket, the PeakPlus Extra, if you intend to travel on the "Transpeak". This ticket is also valid on TM Travel services including the number 65 bus from Buxton to Miller's Dale, but is NOT valid on the number 66 bus back to Buxton.

Is there anything special I need to bring?

Given the nature of this walk, a good pair of walking boots is essential. As the weather can be quite variable and there is little shelter along the route, it is important to also have a good set of waterproof clothing. As the walk takes place in all weathers, and the section around Blackwell is very exposed, you may need warm clothing too. It is also recommended that you bring sufficient food and water with you as there are no opportunities to purchase either along the route of the walk, apart from a mobile catering van that may be at Miller's Dale Station - although this can never be guaranteed.

Are there any disabled access issues?

Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs due to the terrain involved. Those with other mobility issues may find difficulty with sections of the route where the ground is very rocky and uneven, including a fairly steep descent along a rough unpaved lane. For this reason, this walk is not recommended for those with mobility issues.

Is this walk suitable for dogs?

Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control at all times. This is especially important on the section of the walk between leaving the Monsal Trail and entering the village of Blackwell, as the route of the walk passes through a nature reserve and fields where there may be livestock present. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.
