Rural Ramble 5: Three Inns Circular
Distance: 8 miles Duration: 5 to 6 hours
(Including lunch)
Price: 12.00 per person
(Special family/group rates available - see below)

The View Across Taddington Moor
This is the perfect walk for those who love the Peak District scenery, but would like to keep their boots a lot cleaner than on our other Rural Rambles.

Starting from the Queen's Arms in the quiet village of Taddington, the walk begins with a climb up onto the high plateau behind the village. Once there, it crosses Taddington Moor and passes through the equally quiet village of Flagg on the way to a lunch stop at the Duke of York at Pomeroy, well-known locally for its fine food and beer. Following a break for lunch there, the walk returns to Taddington via Chelmorton Thorn and the Waterloo Hotel. As this walk spends most of the time on quiet lanes and little-used trackways, and only crosses a total of six fields, it is perfect for the less serious walker who would like to combine a nice long stroll in the Peak District with some great food and proper real ales.

As Taddington is just a short distance from the town, and easily reached by bus, this walk is perfect for those looking for days out and other things to do in and around Buxton. Although a little further away, it also makes an ideal day out for those looking for things to do during a stay in Bakewell.

While car parking in Taddington is very limited, this walk is easily accessible by bus from Derby, Belper, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton. By changing at Derby, Matlock, Bakewell or Buxton, it is also accessible from places further afield, including Chesterfield, Sheffield and Manchester.

When is this walk available?

This walk is available as a scheduled walk each month between the beginning of March and the end of November. It may also be booked privately between March and November on a date of your choice via a Personal Walking Guide, or any scheduled walk may be upgraded to a private booking (subject to conditions - see below).

This walk can be booked privately via a Personal Walking Guide on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, most Saturdays, some Sundays and most Bank Holidays. If you make a private booking for this walk, either by upgrading a scheduled walk or by booking a Personal Walking Guide, you can also request a different start time if desired. While we cannot guarantee this time, we will make every effort to accommodate your request. Please note that, due to the timing of the buses through Taddington, we cannot accept a start time before 9:30am (10:30am for Sundays and Bank Holidays) or after 12:00pm.

Please note that, for bookings in late November and early March especially, there is the possibility that the walk may take place in snow conditions. If we believe the conditions to be hazardous, we will attempt to notify you at least 24 hours in advance to give you the option of cancelling or rescheduling your booking.

Travel to and from the walk.

This walk is easily accessible by public transport. Due to the lack of public parking in Taddington, it is more difficult to access by car, although it is possible to park elsewhere and take the bus to Taddington. Full details of how to get to and from the walk will be included in the walk information sheet you will be sent along with your booking confirmation, but detailed information on the various public transport options is also available on our travel information page, which we try to keep as up to date as possible.

By far the easiest way to get to this walk, and the method we recommend in most cases, is by bus. Taddington is on the route of the High Peak Buses "Transpeak" service between Derby and Buxton, with some services extended to Machester. The "Transpeak" calls at Belper, Matlock and Bakewell on the way to Taddington from Derby, and so also allows access to this walk from those towns too. On weekdays, the northbound "Transpeak" departs from Derby at 7:30am, arriving at Taddington at 9:03am. However, traffic in Derby can delay the service by up to 20 minutes. On Saturdays, the bus runs a little later, departing Derby at 7:50am, and arrives in Taddington at 9:13am. On Sundays and Bank Holidays, the first service of the day does not arrive into Taddington until 10:13am, and so cannot be used for a 9:30am start time.

The southbound "Transpeak" service departs from Buxton Market Place at 8:40am, arrives at Taddington at 8:55am, and runs at the same times all days of the week.

At the end of the walk, you can then use the "Transpeak" to return home, with southbound departures towards Derby leaving Taddington at 5 minutes to the hour up to 4:55pm, then at 6:05pm and 8:28pm (5:55pm and 8:28pm weekends). Northbound services towards Buxton and Manchester leave Taddington at 13 minutes past the hour up to 6:13pm, and then 10:57pm.

If travelling from further afield, it is possible to reach Taddington by changing to the "Transpeak" at Derby, Buxton or one of its intermediate stops. At the end of the walk, you can then use the "Transpeak" to return to your interchange point for your onward journey home.

Please note that the Derbyshire Wayfarer day rover ticket is not valid on the "Transpeak" and you may need to purchase High Peak Buses own day rover ticket, the PeakPlus Extra, if you intend to travel on the "Transpeak". This ticket is also valid on TM Travel services, but is NOT valid on services by any other operators, or on the trains from Manchester.

While it is possible to drive to this walk, there is no official car park in Taddington, with only on-road parking available on the narrow road through the village. The nearest car park to Taddington is a couple of miles away at White Lodge on the A6 and, after parking there, you can catch the "Transpeak" to Taddington at 8:58am (weekdays) or 9:08am (Saturdays).

Is there anything special I need to bring?

Given the length of this walk, a good pair of walking boots is essential. The weather can be quite variable and there is little shelter along the route, so it is important to also have a good set of waterproof clothing. As the walk takes place in all weathers, and the section around Flagg is very exposed, you may need warm clothing too. It is also recommended that you bring water with you, as there are few opportunities to purchase it along the route of the walk.

Are there any disabled access issues?

Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs due to the presence of locked gates and stiles. We can, however, slightly re-route the walk to miss out all of the sections that are not passable to wheels. This re-routing adds about half a mile to the total distance, and also misses out the Waterloo Hotel, making the walk a "Two Inns" one. This modified walk is only available as a private booking.

Those with other mobility issues may also find this walk difficult due to the presence of stiles. If you are able to cope with these, then the rest of the route should not prove too difficult. If you have any questions or concerns about accessibility, please contact us prior to booking.

Is this walk suitable for dogs?

Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control at all times as the route of the walk passes through fields where there may be livestock present. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.
