Rural Ramble 3: Three Villages and Five Wells
Distance: 6 miles Duration: 2.5 to 3.5 hours Price: £15.00 per person

Five Wells Tomb and the Wye Valley
This six-mile cross-country circular walk begins and ends at the quiet Peak District village of Taddington, between the towns of Bakewell and Buxton. From there, it climbs onto the hills above the village, giving fine views across the Wye Valley and Miller's Dale. It then crosses the fields, passing a number of old lead mines, to the village of Flagg with its haunted hall, and then on to the village of Chelmorton. Besides claiming to be the highest village in Derbyshire at over 1,200 feet above sea level, Chelmorton is surrounded by a network of rare surviving Medieval fields. The village also stands in the shadow of the looming Chelmorton Low, which is topped by a pair of Bronze Age burial mounds. From Chelmorton, the walk then returns to Taddington via a short diversion to visit the Neolithic chambered cairn at Five Wells, said to be the highest such monument in the whole of the UK at over 1,400 feet. From its elevated position on the edge of the Five Wells escarpment, this ancient burial site gives spectacular views northwards over the rolling hills of the High Peak.
Given its more cross-country nature and the somewhat exposed terrain, this is a walk for the more serious walker, and you will definitely need a good pair of boots and outdoor clothing.

Due to the current coronavirus regulations, we can only accept bookings from up to five individuals who must be from a single household, and we have regrettably been forced to temporarily increase the price of the walk as a result. However, once the regulations are relaxed further, we hope to be able to cater for larger groups from multiple households and, at that point, the price will be reduced back to its normal amount.

When is this walk available?

This walk is available as a scheduled walk each month between the beginning of March and the end of November. It may also be booked privately between March and November on a date of your choice via a Personal Walking Guide.

This walk can be booked privately via a Personal Walking Guide on Mondays, some Tuesdays, Wednesdays, most Saturdays, some Sundays and most Bank Holidays. If you make a private booking for this walk, you can also request a different start time if desired. While we cannot guarantee this time, we will make every effort to accommodate your request. Please note that, due to the timing of the buses through Taddington, we cannot accept a start time before 9:30am or after 1:30pm (before 11:00am on Sundays and Bank Holidays).

Please note that, for bookings in late November and early March especially, there is the possibility that the walk may take place in snow conditions. The summit of the walk, at over 1,400 feet, is also very exposed to high winds. If we believe the forecast conditions to be potentially hazardous, we will attempt to notify you at least 24 hours in advance to give you the option of cancelling or rescheduling your booking.

Travel to and from the walk.

In normal times, this walk is easily accessible by both car and public transport, and we would usually recommend the use of public transport as the best option. However, in order to minimise the use of public transport at a time when spaces are severely limited and needed by key workers, we currently recommend that you get someone from your own household to drop you off at the start of the walk, and pick you up at the end. Full details of how to get to and from the walk will be included in the walk information sheet you will be sent along with your booking confirmation, but detailed information on the various public transport options is also available on our travel information page, which we try to keep as up to date as possible.

While it is possible to drive yourself to this walk, there is no official car park in Taddington, with only limited on-road parking available on the narrow road through the village. If you do decide to drive yourself to the walk, please try to park considerately within the village.

Is there anything special I need to bring?

Given the nature of this walk, a good pair of walking boots is essential. The weather can be quite variable and there is little shelter along the route, so it is important to also have a good set of waterproof clothing. As the walk takes place in all weathers, and the section around Flagg and Chelmorton is very exposed, you may need warm clothing too. It is also recommended that you bring sufficient food and water with you, as there are few opportunities to purchase either along the route of the walk.

While the coronavirus crisis is still ongoing, we also ask that you bring your own facemask or similar face covering, plus your own hand sanitiser. While we endevour to maintain proper social distancing at all times on the walks, there are some occasions where it is necessary to use narrow paths. As it would be impossible in most cases to maintain proper social distancing if we were to encounter someone coming the other way along the path, the recommended advice in such a situation is to use a mask or other face covering while passing the other person. There is also the need to touch gates and stiles to pass from field to field or from fields onto roads. In these situations it is advised to use hand sanitiser before and immediately after touching the gate or stile. As we are not able to supply them for you, due to the high costs currently involved in obtaining supplies, it is your responsibility to provide your own, and failure to do so may result in cancellation of the walk.

Are there any disabled access issues?

Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs due to the terrain involved. Those with other mobility issues may also find difficulty with this walk due to the need to cross stiles, etc.

Is this walk suitable for dogs?

Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control at all times as the route of the walk passes through fields where there may be livestock present. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.
