Cromford Mill

Cromford Mill was built in 1771 by inventor Richard Arkwright, and was the world's first successful water-powered cotton mill. Inside the Mill, Arkwright pioneered the principles of modern factory working, making Cromford Mill the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. After it stopped production in 1844, it was used for various purposes including a factory making lead-based paints. When this closed in 1979, the Mill was purchased for preservation by The Arkwright Society. In 2001, it became the keystone of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, which celebrates the area's important role in the story of industrialisation. Today, it is still under long-term restoration, but is open to visitors every day of the year except Christmas Day.
