The Monsal Trail

The Monsal Trail, which follows the route of the old Midland Railway main line running between Derby and Manchester, is one of the most popular walking and cycling trails in the Peak District. One of the most scenic main line railways in the UK, the line was closed to passengers in July 1967, and closed to all traffic just under a year later. In 1980, the Peak District National Park and Derbyshire County Council created the 8.5-mile Monsal Trail using the trackbed of the former railway between Coombes Road Viaduct, just south of Bakewell Station, and Blackwell Mill, three miles to the east of Buxton. For many years, the tunnels along the route were closed to walkers and cyclists, meaning that they had to divert away from the route of the railway to by-pass the closures. All of the tunnels have now been re-opened, but the old route following the river through Chee Dale still provides some spectacular views.
