Rural Ramble 8: Youlgreave and Bradford Dale
|
|
Distance: 4.5 miles |
Duration: 2 to 3 hours |
Price: £6.00 per person (Group and family rates available) |
Bradford Dale |
This circular walk begins and ends in the little roadside hamlet of Alport on the River Lathkill. It follows the road through the popular Peak District village of Youlgreave to the smaller village of Middleton-By-Youlgreave. Along the way, it passes some unusual roadside poetry, and a location of interest for viewers of a certain long-running property redevelopment TV series. In Middleton-By-Youlgreave, it visits the memorial to an RAF bomber crew who crashed nearby, before descending the short and very mossy Middleton Dale to the banks of the River Bradford.
It then follows the river through the wildlife-rich Bradford Dale, where you may see birds such as White-Throated Dippers and Kingfishers. Initially, the dale is narrow and quite heavily wooded, and the river broken up by small dams into a series of fishing pools created by the Duke of Rutland. However, below Youlgreave at the old stone clapper bridge over the river, it opens out into a broad and pleasant grassy valley. This is then followed all of the way to the finish back in Alport, where the River Bradford flows into the River Lathkill.

Due to the slightly rugged nature of part of the route, this walk is not really suitable for those who may have difficulty on rough surfaces. It is also not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters due to the presence of narrow gates and squeeze stiles.

Is there anything special I need to bring?
Although we always advise that you wear proper walking boots on the majority of our walks, this is one of the less challenging walks when it comes to under-foot conditions. As a result, proper walking boots are optional for this walk, and sensible outdoor shoes would be acceptable substitutes as long as they have a good grip pattern on the soles.
As you are going to be outdoors for two or three hours, it would be sensible to bring a waterproof jacket with you, and you may wish to consider waterproof tousers as well if heavy rain has been forecast. In cold weather, a warm hat and gloves would be sensible too, while in hot weather a sun hat and suncream would be recommended.
We also suggest that you bring a small bottle of water with you. In most cases, 500ml per person should be adequate, but in very hot weather we recommend increasing that to 1 litre per person.
|
Are there any disabled access issues?
Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility scooters due to the rough nature of the path down Middleton Dale, and the presence of narrow gates and stiles. Additionally, due to the rough nature of the path down Middleton Dale, this walk may not be suitable for those who find difficulty in walking over uneven ground.
|
Is this walk suitable for dogs?
Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control on a short lead at all times as the route of the walk passes through fields where there may be livestock present, and also due to the sometimes narrow pavements and presence of traffic on the roads from Alport to Middleton-By-Youlgreave. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.
