Rural Ramble 10: Errwood And The Tors
|
|
Distance: 6 or 9 miles |
Duration: 3 to 6 hours |
Price: From £15.00 per person (Group and family rates available) |
View from Shining Tor |
Available in two different distances, this walk starts in the Goyt Valley just west of Buxton, next to the water of Errwood Reservoir. After visiting the ruins of Errwood Hall, it climbs the ridge behind the Hall up to the road at Pym Chair. There, it follows the county boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire along the ridge, past Cat Tor to Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire.
From Shining Tor, the short 6-mile route descends down through the trees below for the return to Errwood Hall car park. The longer 9-mile route heads off in the opposite direction, down to the famous Cat and Fiddle road between Buxton and Macclesfield. Having passed the always popular Cat and Fiddle pub, now home to Britain's highest altitude whiskey distillery, the walk leaves the Cat and Fiddle road to head for Derbyshire Bridge. From there, it follows the road and beginnings of the River Goyt down Goyt's Clough to the finish back at Errwood Hall car park.
|
Although not a very challenging walk in terms of terrain, it does pose a challenge with the weather conditions. At over 1,800 feet above sea level, Shining Tor offers some wonderful views across the Cheshire Plain. However, it is also prone to low cloud and hill fog, so we cannot offer any guarantee that you will actually see those views! Because of the possibility of fog, rain and high winds, even in the summer, you will need good outdoor clothing including waterproof jacket and trousers or overtrousers for this walk.

Travel to and from the walk.
Unfortunately, there is no public transport to and from this walk, as Errwood Hall car park is not on any bus route, and the closest bus stop is over two miles away up a very steep hill. Therefore, your only real option is to travel by car. Parking at Errwood Hall car park is currently free, and there is space for around 50 cars, so parking is not usually an issue.
If you book the 9-mile walk privately and wish to use public transport, there is the option to change the start and finish point to the Cat and Fiddle pub, which is accessible from Buxton and Macclesfield via the regular High Peak Buses 58 bus service.
Information on how to get to and from this walk can be found on our travel information page.

Is there anything special I need to bring?
Due to the terrain involved and the possible weather conditions, you will need proper walking gear for these walks. Due to the terrain involved, you will need a pair of good-quality proper walking boots. You will also need waterproofs, both jacket and trousers or overtrousers, plus an additional warm layer that you can put on if needed, plus a warm hat and gloves. In hot conditions, a sun hat and suncream is recommended, due to the lack of shelter on much of the walk.
As there is nowhere directly on the route of the walks where you can buy food or drink, except for the Cat and Fiddle Inn on the 9-mile route, you will need to carry all food and water for the day with you. On a hot day, please make sure to bring plenty of water, at least 2 litres per person, as you will need it.
|
Are there any disabled access issues?
Unfortunately, this walk is not suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or those with other mobility issues due to the terrain involved.
|
Is this walk suitable for dogs?
Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control at all times. This is especially important on the sections of the walk that pass through fields where there may be livestock present. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.
