(Group & family rates available)

Stanage Stanage Stanage Stanage Stanage Stanage
Stanage Edge

This accessible road-based circular walk begins and ends at one of the Peak District's most popular tourist spots, Ladybower Dam. From there it offers a choice of two distances as it heads out following the course of the River Derwent down past the village of Bamford, and along to the neighbouring village of Hathersage. There, it begins a steep climb up the hills behind the village, which offer some fine views out across the landscape as the road climbs up to the base of Stanage Edge. It is at this point the two routes of the walk split, offering a shorter 7.6-mile route or a longer 9.1-mile one. Having followed the road along the base of Stanage Edge, the two routes then rejoin to make the final descent down to the finish back at Ladybower Dam.

Travel to and from the walk.

This walk is easily accessible from both Sheffield and Manchester via accessible public transport. As both of these cities have good connections to the surrounding area, it can also be accessed from many other towns and cities including Derby, Nottingham, Buxton, Chesterfield and Matlock. It can also be accessed by car, although parking can be an issue on busy days. Full details of how to get to and from the walk will be included in the walk information sheet you will be sent along with your booking confirmation, but detailed information on the various public transport options is also available on our travel information page, which we try to keep as up to date as possible.

Bamford is within the areas covered by both the Derbyshire Wayfarer and Greater Manchester Wayfarer day rover tickets. Both may be used on any train services to and from the village at weekends and on Bank Holidays, and the Derbyshire Wayfarer may also be used on the 9:14am train from Sheffield to Bamford on weekdays as well. As the Greater Manchester Wayfarer is not valid on weekday trains until 9:30am, it is not possible to use this on the 8:48am weekday train from Manchester Piccadilly to Bamford.

Are there any disabled access issues?

This walk has been specifically designed to be as accessible as possible. To that end, it is suitable for most mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs. However, due to some of the steeper gradients involved, we do not recommend it for manual wheelchairs of any kind. The route also passes through a number of pedestrian gates, so it may not be suitable for very wide scooters or wheelchairs that have issues with standard-width pedestrian gates.

Is this walk suitable for dogs?

Yes, this walk is suitable for dogs. However, we do ask that you keep your dog under close control at all times, as it is possible to encounter road traffic at any point along either of the routes of this walk. There are also sections of the routes where free-roaming sheep have direct unrestricted access to the road. For these reasons, it's important that you keep your dog on a short non-extendible lead at all times. If you wish to bring your dog with you, please notify us beforehand.

Ladybower, Hathersage and Stanage Edge Circular
Distance: 7.6 or 9.1 miles Duration: 4 to 6 hours Price: From £15.00 per person
(Group and family rates available)

Stanage Edge
This accessible road-based circular walk begins and ends at one of the Peak District's most popular tourist spots, Ladybower Dam in the Upper Derwent Valley, and offers a choice of two distances to suit different abilities. From the start at the road end of Ladybower Dam, it crosses the dam wall, providing a close-up look at the famous "plugholes", and then uses the road and a section of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way as it follows the course of the River Derwent down past the village of Bamford. It then follows the main road to the neighbouring village of Hathersage, where it begins a steep and challenging climb up the hills behind the village. Although long and quite challenging, this climb is well worth it as offers some fine views out across the landscape as the road climbs up to the base of Stanage Edge. It is during this climb that the two routes of the walk split, offering a shorter and easier 7.6-mile route or a longer and more challenging 9.1-mile one. Having followed the road along the base of Stanage Edge, the longer route rejoins the shorter one to make the final descent down to the finish back at Ladybower Dam.
The two routes of this walk use relatively traffic-free lanes, designated walking trails and pavements (along the main road between Bamford and Hathersage) all of the way, except for a little section of grass paths and gravel (which may be a little muddy in wet weather) by Bamford Cricket Club. A large part of the route below Stanage Edge is a designated "Quiet Lane", giving priority to walkers and cyclists. Both routes have been designed from the outset to be as accessible as possible, although there are a few steep gradients both up and down in places. For this reason, we do not recommend it for manual wheelchairs, either self-propelled or pushed. There is parking near to the start and finish point, including designated disabled spaces and toilets, and there is a nearby bus stop served by regular buses from Sheffield, which also provide a link to a stop near to Bamford Railway Station. If you would like to celebrate the completion of the walk with a drink or a meal, the excellent Yorkshire Bridge Inn is just a short distance down the road from the finish point of the walk.

When is this walk available?

This walk is available as a scheduled walk several times each month between the beginning of March and the end of November. It may also be booked privately on a date of your choice by booking a Personal Walking Guide.

If you make a private booking for this walk, you can also request a different start time if desired. While we cannot guarantee this time, we will make every effort to accommodate your request.

Please note that, for bookings in late November and early March especially, there is the possibility that the walk may take place in snow or icy conditions. This can make conditions difficult, or make access to the start and finish point of the walk difficult as the roads are easily blocked by snow. If we believe that the forecast weather conditions could be potentially hazardous, we will attempt to notify you at least 24 hours in advance to give you the option of cancelling or rescheduling your booking.

Is there anything special I need to bring?

As facilities at the start and finish point, and in the village of Bamford, are very limited, we recommend that you make sure you bring everything you need for the day with you. The only possibility for purchasing water or food along the route of either walk is at the petrol station by Bamford traffic lights. Given the exposed nature of some sections of the routes, its important that you make sure you have some good waterproofs with you, and also extra layers that you can add if you start to feel cold as a result of the wind. Even on a fine summer day, it can be quite breezy below Stanage Edge, and this can knock several degrees off the forecast temperature, so you need to be prepared for that.
