Cromford Station to Riber Castle Circular Walk

This six-mile walk takes in a number of locations and interesting views. It begins at the pretty and well-preserved Cromford Station, before climbing the hillside to the hamlet of Riber. There, it passes Riber Castle, the well-known landmark that dominates the skyline above Matlock, and gives fine views across the town below. The return leg of the walk gives views across Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham, before dropping back down into the valley for the return to Cromford Station. Due to the terrain involved, it does include some steep climbs and descents.

Distance: 6 miles.
Time required: 3 hours.
Difficulty: Moderate - Some steep hills.
Map(s): OS Explorer OL24 - The Peak District: White Peak Area.

Cromford - Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution

This two-mile walk shows you all of the most interesting areas of the historic mill village of Cromford, where inventor Richard Arkwright set up his pioneering cotton mills that started the Industrial Revolution. The walk ends at the gates of Cromford Mill, where you can take a tour of the site led by a guide from the Arkwright Society, or just wander around and visit the shops.

The Cromford Canal

Take a relaxing 5.5 mile stroll along the surviving section of the Cromford Canal. Now a popular walking route through a peaceful local nature reserve, the canal was built in the 18th century to link Cromford with the Erewash Canal at Langley Mill, a distance of over 14 miles. This walk tells the story of the canal, and also of the many different industries it once served.

Price: £6.00 per person.
