Beginning in the pretty village of Tideswell, this circular walk heads out along a quiet lane to the neighbouring village of Litton. From there, it follows another quiet country lane across the plateau to the top end of the village of Cressbrook. Descending through the village to the historic Cressbrook Mill, one of the very first factories of the Industrial Revolution, it follows the road through Monsal Dale for the climb up to the viewpoint at Monsal Head.

Following a lunch stop there, the route drops down to the famous Headstone Viaduct on the Monsal Trail, before heading back up Monsal Dale on the Monsal Trail. Having passed though Cressbrook and Litton Tunnels, it passes high above the buildings of Litton Mill, notorious in the 18th century for its horrific working conditions. Reaching the former interchange station at Miller's Dale, the walk drops down to the road below, and follows the River Wye back downstream before leaving Miller's Dale and heading up through Tideswell Dale for the return to the start point in the village of Tideswell.

The route of this walk uses roads, trails and firm-surfaced paths, and so is very suitable for those who wish to avoid any cross-country walking on muddy footpaths.

Is there anything special I need to bring?

Given the distance involved, sensible outdoor footwear is essential. Proper walking boots or trainer-style walking shoes are best, but any sensible outdoor footwear that you are comfortable walking long distances in, and that have a decent grip pattern, would be OK.

As you will be out all day, waterproofs are essential, and we recommend both a waterproof jacket and either trousers or overtrousers too. In cold weather, please bring a warm hat, gloves and an extra warm layer that you can put on if needed. In warm weather, please bring a sun hat and suncream, as there are sections of the walk that are quite exposed.

You will also need to bring water with you - we recommend around 2 litres per person for the day. If you find that additional water is needed, you can get this at the lunch stop at Monsal Head.

For a scheduled walk, please bring lunch with you. For a private booking, it may be possible to arrange the timings to allow for a pub lunch at Monsal Head if desired. However, given the numbers visiting Monsal Head on busy days, this may not be a practical option at weekends or Bank Holidays.
