Temporary Wet Weather Schedule

The unusually wet winter of 2023/24 has caused quite a number of problems across the Peak District. A number of roads have had to be closed due to landslips caused by the wet weather. It has also resulted in some areas of the Peak District becoming very waterlogged, with actual localised floods in some places. In other places, the combination of farm animals and large numbers of walkers has badly churned up the soft ground, turning some fields and footpaths into wide seas of very deep and slippy mud.

This has had the effect of making some of those footpaths either temporarily impassible, or very hazardous to use. As some of those paths affected are those used by some of our walks, this has had the result that those walks cannot safely be completed as normal. We have therefore been forced to reroute some walks to avoid the affected areas or, where this is not possible without a major diversion that would significantly increase the length of the walk, temporarily suspend the walk until such time as the conditions improve.

We are continuously monitoring the situation with the ground conditions, and hope to be able to return to the regular routes of the walks, or restart the suspended ones, as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

The changes we have had to make to our walks are listed below. Additional information on those changes can be found on the individual walk pages by following the links from this page. If you require any other additional information on the changes, please e-mail us with your questions.

No change - all of the route is unaffected by the wet ground conditions, so still available as advertised.

Muddy conditions on the fields between King Sterndale. As a result, this walk will temporarily not use the footpaths across the fields on this section of the walk, and will instead use a slightly longer road-based route. This will increase the total length of the walk by approximately 2 miles, to around 15.5 miles.

Temporarily suspended due to muddy conditions next to the river in parts of Monsal Dale.

No change - all of the route is unaffected by the wet ground conditions, so still available as advertised.

No change - all of the route is unaffected by the wet ground conditions, apart from occasional little minor bits of mud on the towpath, so still available as advertised.

Temporarily suspended due to extremely hazardous muddy conditions below Lose Hill, with no practical diversion around. Will restart as soon as the ground dries out sufficiently to allow safe passage.

Temporarily rerouted due to hazardous muddy conditions and flooding between Hartington and Wolfscote Dale, and flooding in Biggin Dale. Only available as a temporary 9-mile route (6-mile option not available) which does not include Beresford or Biggin Dales, and does not call at Hartington Station.

Temporarily rerouted to use roads and tracks in place of footpaths across muddy fields. This rerouting increased the distance from 6 miles to 8 miles, and the time required by approximately 1 hour.

Due to the temporary closure of Chelmorton Footpath 37 at Topley Pike for quarry-related work, all bookings for this walk have been suspended until further notice.

Temporarily rerouted to use roads and tracks in place of footpaths across muddy fields. This rerouting does not significantly change the distance of the walk, but does mean that it does not cross Haddon Fields, and so does not give any views of Haddon Hall.

Rural Ramble 6: Six Dales Circular

Start of walk delayed due to unsuitable ground conditions along part of the route. Will now probably begin to be offered for bookings in the summer.

Rural Ramble 7: Padley Gorge and Carl Wark

Still planned to start in summer 2024, but this is dependent upon the ground conditions being suitable.

No change - some minor mud along some sections of the route, but still safely passable, so walk still available as advertised.

No change - some minor mud along some sections of the route, but still safely passable, so walk still available as advertised.

No change - some minor mud around the Black Rocks section of the route, but not unusually muddy for the area and still safely passable, so walk still available as advertised.
